Bruno Fernandes, the captain of Manchester United, expressed his views on the impact of the team's dramatic victory over Roma on Tuesday regarding the future of head coach Michael Carrick. Fernandes emphasized that the players are not aiming to save anyone's position after overturning a two-goal deficit to win 3-2, ending a run of nine matches without a victory. The team faced clear difficulties both on and off the pitch, which led to their drop to seventeenth place in the Premier League, just above the relegation zone on goal difference, alongside losing two of their first three Champions League matches. Pressure on Carrick increased, especially after the first half ended with the team trailing 2-0 against Roma at Old Trafford. During the match, Fernandes scored from a penalty that was retaken after the first attempt was missed, before Matheus Cunha led a comeback with two goals, securing the home win, despite Cunha being sent off in stoppage time after receiving a second yellow card. When asked if the victory saved the coach's job, Fernandes replied, "No, we are not here to save anyone's position." He added that the club and players desperately needed this win and that they had worked hard to overcome the difficult situation. He also noted that the recent period was filled with speculation and inaccurate reports about his relationship with the coach. He clarified that the decision to keep him on the bench was due to a dip in his performance, not as a punishment for his statements, affirming his respect for the coach's decision. Fernandes confirmed that this does not affect his confidence in the coaching staff nor his goal to win every upcoming match. Manchester United is preparing to face Aston Villa in the Premier League next Sunday, with Fernandes hoping the victory over Roma marks a new starting point for the team this season and helps regain the fans' trust.
