The global oil market faces a sharp rise in crude shipping costs, rendering many long-distance transport operations economically unfeasible. This surge primarily stems from a severe shortage of available giant oil tankers for hire in several key regions. These conditions compel global refineries to alter strategies, now favoring oil purchases from geographically closer sources to circumvent exorbitant transportation burdens. To illustrate the challenge, shipping one barrel of oil from Houston to Asia has jumped by $26, totaling $52 million per shipment, representing nearly a quarter of West Texas Intermediate's current price. Notably, these transport costs constituted a minor fraction of the total shipment cost before tensions linked to Iran escalated.
