Iraq Announces Achieving Self-Sufficiency in Strategic Crops, with Wheat at the Forefront

The Ministry of Agriculture announced on Saturday that Iraq has achieved self-sufficiency in wheat and other strategic crops, while affirming the continuous daily monitoring of markets and prices by its field committees. In this context, the official spokesperson for the Ministry, Qusay Al-Hattab, explained that the Ministry plays a pivotal role in regulating market movement and prices. Specialized committees affiliated with the Planning and Follow-up Department conduct daily field tours in major wholesale markets, including Al-Rashid, Jamila, and Zuwaini. Al-Hattab added that these committees submit daily periodic reports containing detailed indicators on price levels, the availability of local products, and import and marketing activities. These reports are crucial for making appropriate decisions to ensure market stability and protect both consumers and local producers. He noted that the country has achieved self-sufficiency in strategic crops, with wheat at the forefront, which has positively impacted national production abundance. He also clarified that the Ministry of Trade handles the marketing process for wheat and barley through organized government mechanisms after receiving them from farmers, ensuring full coverage of local needs.
