Iraqi innovation integrates artificial intelligence with VAR technology

The sports scene has witnessed the introduction of an advanced technical vision aimed at making a qualitative leap in match management by leveraging modern digital development. In this context, Iraqi technical expert and sports critic Ahmed Yunus presented a comprehensive innovative concept to develop the video assistant referee system by integrating it with artificial intelligence technologies, with the aim of accelerating arbitration decision-making processes and reducing the wasted time resulting from reviewing controversial clips. The submitted proposal, which carries a preliminary name of "AI-VAR Decision Assistant," relies on an advanced intelligent system that performs immediate and continuous analysis of images coming from various stadium cameras. This system undertakes the task of accurately recognizing players and the football, tracking their movement paths, determining contact points with high precision, and dealing with complex offside situations, penalty kicks, handballs, and various infractions. The core mechanism of the idea is based on the smart system determining the exact timing of the incident with extreme precision, selecting the best possible camera angle, and arranging the sequence of events to present them directly to the video assistant referee accompanied by an analytical confidence degree that contributes to accelerating the decision-making process, while continuously emphasizing that the final decision remains exclusively within the authority of the human referee without any replacement. In addition, the technical concept includes utilizing computer vision techniques and 3D tracking systems to rebuild refereeing incidents from multiple viewing angles, making it easier for the referee to quickly reach the decisive clip without wasting time searching manually among multiple replays. In a related context, the initiator considered that there is a real possibility to develop a preliminary experimental model and test it in local stadiums within the Iraq Stars League in the future, by benefiting from match footage and refereeing archives, and through the joint efforts of experts and specialists in arbitration, digital technology, and artificial intelligence fields. This initiative essentially seeks to elevate the video assistant referee system to be faster, more accurate, and more transparent in front of the public, which opens wide horizons for local football to enter an advanced stage of employing modern technology to develop refereeing cadres and the system as a whole.
