The Moroccan national team has faced another setback in attracting dual-nationality players after Wael Mohaya, the Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder, chose to represent Germany following his first call-up by coach Jürgen Klopp. Klopp announced Germany's squad today, Thursday, in preparation for the UEFA Nations League matches, including 17-year-old Mohaya among a group of young talents as part of the coach's strategy to rejuvenate the team and provide opportunities for emerging players. Mohaya was born in Mettmann near Düsseldorf to Moroccan parents and is considered one of the most promising talents in German football, having impressed with his performances at Mönchengladbach and scored two consecutive goals in the Bundesliga despite his team's challenging start this season. The call-up was not surprising from a technical standpoint, as Klopp has shown clear admiration for the player's abilities, but the move represents a disappointment for the Moroccan Football Federation, which had tried to convince him to represent the Atlas Lions recently. The Moroccan coaching staff, led by Mohamed Wahbi, contacted the player recently in an attempt to include him in the November camp roster, but Mohaya requested time to think without closing the door on Morocco. Nevertheless, indications suggested his inclination toward Germany before Klopp personally intervened, holding discussions with the young talent to explain his project and persuade him to undertake his international career with Germany. Mohaya's call-up crowns his remarkable development, especially given his previous experience with Germany's youth teams and his impressive Bundesliga appearances despite his young age. Klopp expressed his admiration for Mohaya's abilities, affirming that his inclusion fits a long-term vision to build Germany's future team, noting that playing in the Bundesliga at 17 is an exceptional achievement. The coach explained that he communicated with the player and his family to discuss how they want to handle the situation, emphasizing his genuine interest in building the future with such players without making promises. He added that Mohaya's presence in the camp is mainly to gain experience and get acquainted with the senior team environment, stressing the importance of experiencing training firsthand when given the opportunity. Klopp noted that the player's continued involvement with the national team will depend on his performance and behavior on and off the pitch, joking about Mohaya's confidence compared to his own at that age. This choice recalls the case of Younes Ben Taleb, Eintracht Frankfurt striker, who opted to represent Germany last September after Morocco attempted to recruit him. Klopp also played a significant role in Ben Taleb's decision, who justified his choice by saying, "When Klopp calls you, you have to go." Consequently, Morocco loses another promising player of Moroccan descent to Germany within a short period, repeating a scenario with other players whom the Moroccan federation sought to convince to wear the Atlas Lions jersey.
