Joan Laporta, president of Barcelona FC, revealed the club's desire to host a tribute ceremony for its Argentine legend, Lionel Messi, at Spotify Camp Nou after its development works are complete, while simultaneously ruling out the world champion's return to the squad as a player. During the club's General Assembly, Laporta confirmed informing Messi of this wish, expressing pleasure at holding the anticipated tribute. He clarified it would take place once the stadium is complete, provided Messi desires it. The president hoped to see Messi soon, expecting the ceremony could host approximately 105,000 spectators. Regarding Messi's potential return to play for Barcelona, Laporta indicated the matter appears difficult. He attributed this to the Argentine player's nature and his constant passion for participation, competition, and desire to win, even in training. Laporta affirmed Messi was one of history's best players, but life changes, and the club is enthusiastic about talents like Lamine Yamal, a candidate for individual and collective titles. He explained that "it is difficult for Messi to come and play for just 15 minutes," stressing that "Leo always wants to play and win." With a highly competitive team, Laporta believes his return would be difficult. Laporta also addressed the period preceding Messi's departure, noting a possibility for him to stay an additional season, but he made a different decision. Messi concluded his career with Barcelona in summer 2021 after over two decades, then moved to Paris Saint-Germain before joining Inter Miami in 2023.
