The Ministry of Electricity announced the near completion of the Gulf electricity interconnection project with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, a vital initiative to enhance national grid stability. This announcement follows significant execution progress, with the project expected to supply the national grid with up to 2000 megawatts. Ministry spokesperson Dr. Eng. Ahmed Turki Jiad stated that 218 of the 221 power towers for the interconnection project have been completed. He noted the remaining three towers will cross the Shatt al-Arab waterway, underscoring the project's importance in improving the national grid's efficiency in the long term, once its works are finalized. Jiad also clarified the Ministry's coordination with the World Bank to prioritize the Gulf electricity interconnection among specialized energy sector projects. Detailed discussions on the project file are anticipated soon to ensure its progress. Jiad further highlighted that current imported power from Turkey, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, and investment stations in the Kurdistan Region collectively supply the national grid with approximately 2650 megawatts. The General Company for Transmission of Electric Power for the Southern Region directly supervises the completion of power tower connections with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in coordination with the Gulf Interconnection Authority for effective project implementation.
