Ongoing negotiations between Iran and the Sultanate of Oman are reportedly moving towards granting Tehran control over vessels entering the Persian Gulf via the Strait of Hormuz. This development, confirmed by a prominent Iranian source and regional officials, is seen as a significant concession to Iran since the commencement of discussions concerning the strategic waterway. However, sources downplayed earlier statements by US President Donald Trump regarding an imminent agreement to reopen the strait, underscoring that crucial issues remain unresolved. One regional official confirmed that the concession granting Iran some form of control over Hormuz has already been agreed upon. Another regional official added that Gulf negotiators insist on regional states overseeing ship inspections and that any fees paid be optional, with the definition of "control" still under debate. The Iranian source indicated that the current draft text grants Iran control over incoming vessels, while its role regarding departing ships remains a major point of contention in the ongoing talks.
