In light of ongoing efforts to pursue organized crime networks and the trade of psychotropic substances, the relevant authorities issued official clarifications regarding the field developments witnessed in Basra Governorate. The General Directorate of Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Affairs revealed on Tuesday the details and background of the security incident that resulted in the death of a drug promoter, as well as the injury of two officers and five security personnel, after the suspect used an offensive weapon by detonating a hand grenade during an attempt to arrest him and carry out a field security duty. The directorate explained in its official statement that the special units moved to apprehend the suspect, and after tightly surrounding him, the concerned person proceeded to pull the pin of a hand grenade in his possession and detonated it during negotiation attempts, resulting in his immediate death and the injury of seven members of the security force carrying out the duty. In a related context, the directorate stressed that this painful incident will not deter its security units from continuing their national tasks with utmost firmness and responsibility, pursuing all those involved in drug promotion and trafficking crimes, and taking all necessary strict legal procedures against them to deter outlaws. The concerned authorities concluded their affirmations that the security apparatus is proceeding forward in performing its constitutional duties to protect society, consolidate the pillars of the rule of law, and firmly confront anyone who attempts to threaten the security of citizens and the safety of security forces.
