The Spanish Football Federation has imposed a financial penalty on Barcelona in a case that escalated tensions between the Catalan club and Atletico Madrid, following accusations of contacting player Julian Alvarez without adhering to the contractual procedures. The final decision was to fine Barcelona 602 euros, an amount described as trivial compared to the potential sanctions initially considered, recalling a similar incident between the two clubs years ago. The ruling was based on Article 133 of the Spanish Federation's disciplinary code, which addresses violations of instructions and organizational decisions, allowing fines up to 602 euros for minor infractions, along with possible additional penalties such as suspension or activity bans for a certain period, or even stadium closure for one match. The Spanish Federation had launched an extraordinary disciplinary investigation in late July after Atletico Madrid filed an official complaint related to Julian Alvarez. It was noted that FIFA did not handle the case due to lack of jurisdiction over disputes between clubs under the same national federation. The case originated from Barcelona's interest in signing Argentine striker Julian Alvarez, who is under contract with Atletico Madrid until June 2030, including a release clause valued at 500 million euros. Atletico Madrid accused Barcelona of contacting the player and attempting to persuade him during the contractual protection period, which restricts negotiations without following established rules. The club relied on the Spanish competition regulations requiring written notification to the current club before commencing negotiations with a contracted professional player. Atletico had expressed objections in May to what it described as a campaign targeting Alvarez, citing leaks and communications considered offensive, and filed formal complaints on June 30 with both the Spanish and international federations. Meanwhile, Barcelona's interest in the striker was public, with the club president mentioning the coach's desire to acquire him, while Atletico insisted on not selling the player even for high offers. It is noteworthy that this is not the first time the relationship between the two clubs has seen such disputes, as in summer 2019 a similar conflict arose over Barcelona's negotiations with French striker Antoine Griezmann. That case ended with Barcelona fined only 300 euros despite violations related to starting negotiations without notifying Atletico, and a proposal to close Camp Nou for one match was rejected. The similarity between the two cases highlights the limited gap between the scale of the sports dispute and the financial penalties imposed; in both instances, Atletico resorted to official channels to contest Barcelona's dealings with players under contract, but the fines remained modest.
