Strong Rise in US Stock Market Following Congressional Control Outcome

The US financial markets experienced a notable surge following the announcement of the midterm election results, with the Democratic Party securing control over both chambers of Congress, sparking widespread optimism on Wall Street. The S&P 500 index closed at 7688.73 points, marking a 1.44% increase from the previous close. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq Composite rose by the same percentage to 25736.51 points, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 3.03% to reach 53362.57 points. In stock performance, AI companies showed mixed results; major firms with strong cash reserves saw gains, while chip manufacturers and data center operators declined after Democrats made gains in key states housing data centers. Conversely, shares of SpaceX and Tesla underperformed amid concerns over potential tightening of AI regulations. Terry Sandven, chief equity strategist at US Bank Wealth Management, explained that the clarity of election outcomes reduces market uncertainty, noting that elections often create a form of economic gridlock which typically benefits stock prices. On the commodities front, gold prices rose to a two-week high supported by a weaker dollar, with futures increasing 1.61% to $4138.40, reaching their highest level since October 22, while spot prices climbed 1.60% to $4125.51. Meanwhile, the dollar weakened in trading after the decisive Democratic victory removed some market ambiguity, as investors weigh the likelihood of regulatory changes. The US dollar index fell 0.28% to 101.2810 points.
