U.S. diplomats and their families have begun a gradual return to American embassies across the Middle East, according to recent news reports. The New York Times had previously indicated that Washington might commence this week the repatriation of its diplomats who were evacuated following recent tensions with Iran. The newspaper's article at the time confirmed that "U.S. diplomats, and at least some family members, have begun returning to U.S. embassies in the Middle East." In a related development, U.S. embassies in Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain announced on Friday the lifting of previously imposed restrictions on their operations. These steps follow a period of regional tension, where the United States and Israel had initiated strikes against targets within Iranian territory on February 28, which were met with retaliatory Iranian strikes. Although Tehran and Washington signed a memorandum to cease hostilities in mid-June, they exchanged strikes again shortly thereafter. Currently, the conflict remains unresolved without a military settlement, and the United States relies on economic pressure.
