US officials have emphatically denied recent reports suggesting Washington offered to sell arms to Beijing. Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, they asserted that US law explicitly prohibits such transactions. Officials stressed that President Donald Trump's administration had no plans to sell weapons to China, as American laws expressly forbid their supply to Beijing. This denial follows earlier remarks by then-US Ambassador to China, David P. Bernhardt, who stated Sunday in a Fox News interview that President Trump had once asked his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, about his interest in purchasing American weapons. Another US official confirmed to the Wall Street Journal that Washington never extended any such offers to Chinese authorities. The Chinese President's previous three-day visit to the United States yielded no major public breakthroughs on several key contentious issues, including Taiwan.
