US Secretary of State Marco Rubio affirmed Tuesday significant progress in ongoing talks with Iran regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The Secretary stated that an agreement with Iran concerning Hormuz "may be announced very soon." The US Treasury Secretary, in a televised interview, emphasized that the United States is "engaged in negotiations with Iran to ensure the opening of the Strait of Hormuz" for international navigation. Press reports, citing Iranian and American officials, revealed Iran and Oman are nearing an agreement aimed at fully reopening the Strait of Hormuz to shipping. Under the proposed agreement, vessels entering the Strait from the Indian Ocean via the Gulf of Oman would use a route through Iranian territorial waters. Conversely, ships departing the Strait from the Arabian Gulf would take a parallel route near the Omani coast along the southern side. This arrangement aims to regulate navigation, ensuring the continued flow of global oil, historically one-fifth of world production during peacetime. However, a US official, in a statement to the same reports, denied the accuracy of Iran's description of the anticipated agreement. The official asserted that no fees would be collected, and Tehran would have no role in determining which vessels could pass or their designated routes. This stance reflects clear divergence in views between the two sides regarding the agreement's nature and implementation.
