Widespread concerns regarding a medical trial depriving infants in Africa of vaccine

The international health arena is witnessing heated debates and mounting objections against the background of controversial research conducted in Guinea-Bissau involving approximately 14,000 newborns, where half of the participants are deliberately deprived of receiving the hepatitis B vaccine throughout the first six weeks of their lives. This medical study, supervised by a Danish research team, aims to conduct an accurate comparison between the health conditions of children who receive vaccination immediately upon birth and those of other groups whose vaccination is delayed. This has sparked sharp criticism from scientific circles regarding ethical repercussions and serious health risks, resulting in four researchers officially resigning from their membership in the research ethics committee at the University of Southern Denmark in protest against these practices. The most prominent current concerns lie in the possibility of infants being exposed to the virus causing chronic infection and severe liver damage, at a time when data revealed that the project received financial funding estimated at about 1.6 million dollars provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States to support its implementation.
