Central Bank Governor Denies Issuing New Currency and Reveals Narrowing Exchange Rate Gap

Central Bank Governor Nizar Nasser Hussein confirmed on Thursday that reports about printing new currency notes are inaccurate, highlighting a significant reduction in the gap between the official exchange rate and the parallel market rate, which has decreased from 24% to 9%. This statement came during a visit by the Parliamentary Investment and Development Committee, headed by MP Nahida Al-Daini, to the Central Bank to discuss the repercussions of changes in the dollar exchange rate on the economic and investment landscape, as well as the challenges faced by investors and local companies. During the visit, the committee reviewed measures implemented by the Central Bank to support the national economy, including backing government and private banks to provide facilitated loans to citizens ranging from 5 million to 15 million dinars. The Central Bank Governor emphasized that there has been no printing of new currency, dismissing circulating rumors as inaccurate. The parliamentary committee stressed the importance of mitigating the impacts of exchange rate fluctuations on the costs of investment projects, raw material prices, and contractual obligations, in addition to their effects on market stability and citizens' purchasing power. The committee called for well-studied solutions that balance the requirements of monetary stability with the protection of economic and investment activities, and highlighted the need to enhance coordination between the Central Bank, government entities, and the banking sector to remove obstacles facing investors and facilitate financing procedures. It affirmed that stable monetary policy and clear banking procedures are fundamental to creating an attractive investment environment, noting ongoing monitoring of priority economic issues and efforts to develop practical recommendations to support investment, safeguard citizens' interests, and strengthen the national economy.
