Continuous Exodus from Israel Includes Academic Elite

A recent research report, issued by a research and information center, revealed concerning figures regarding emigration from Israel, with net migration between 2022 and 2024 exceeding 140,000 people. The report indicated that the number of departures rose sharply in recent years. From an annual average of approximately 40,500 individuals before 2021, it jumped to 59,400 in 2022, then peaked at 82,800 in 2023, before slightly declining to 69,500 in 2024. Data showed that young people in the 20-44 age group constitute about half of those who have left since 2022, a proportion significantly exceeding their share in the total population. The report also highlighted the higher educational attainment of emigrants; 33.2% hold a Bachelor's degree, compared to only 21.5% of the general population. The proportion of Master's degree holders among emigrants reached 23.5% versus 11.9% of the population, while PhD holders accounted for 3.7% compared to just 0.8% across the general population. In a deeper analysis, the report pointed out that 25% of PhD holders in mathematics in Israel currently reside abroad (for three years or more), along with about 22% of PhD holders in computer science, 19% of geneticists, and 17% of senior physicists. The study refuted previous claims that the majority of those leaving are recent immigrants, as 2024 data revealed that 52% of those who departed were born in Israel, while only 48% were foreign-born. The number of long-term emigrants, whether native-born citizens or long-term immigrants, also increased by 53% between 2021 and 2023. Conversely, the number of Israelis returning to the country witnessed a notable decrease, falling from an annual average of 24,450 to just 18,800 in 2024.
