Court of Cassation Upholds Prison Sentence for MP Bahaa Al-Nouri

The Court of Cassation announced today, Tuesday, its confirmation of the sentence against Member of Parliament Bahaa Al-Din Noor Mohammed Hussein. Previously, the Federal Integrity Commission had issued a seven-year prison sentence against the MP after convicting him of illicit gain. The court's ruling was based on the provisions of Article (19/Second) of the Integrity Commission and Illicit Gain Law No. (30 of 2011) as amended. The court also ordered the defendant to repay the illicit gains amounting to 5,887,850,000 Iraqi dinars and 10,990,787 US dollars, in addition to imposing a financial penalty equal to the value of the illicit gain, according to Article (19/Fourth) of the law. Furthermore, the court issued an additional sentence of three years of severe imprisonment against the defendant pursuant to Article (19/Fifth) of the same law, due to concealment of information in his financial disclosure form. The court decided to apply the severest penalty and upheld the seizure of the defendant’s movable and immovable assets.
