England Winger Gordon: Focus on Physical Strengths, Don't Imitate Spain's Style

As a significant UEFA Nations League fixture approaches, discussions within English football circles are reigniting regarding the national team's optimal playing style. In this context, winger Anthony Gordon has firmly expressed his conviction that the England squad should abandon any attempts to emulate Spain's possession-based approach. Instead, Gordon urged the team to revert to its customary style, relying more heavily on the physical prowess that characterizes English players. This perspective aligns with previous remarks by coach Thomas Tuchel, who faced considerable criticism following England's semi-final defeat to Argentina in the World Cup last July. At the time, Tuchel stated that ball possession was "not part of England players' genes" to the extent it is in Spain, where a highly passing-oriented style is taught across all youth levels. Gordon, who recently transferred from Newcastle United to Spanish club Barcelona last May, reinforces his coach's view. Speaking on Wednesday, ahead of England's anticipated UEFA Nations League clash against Spain in London this coming Saturday, he stated his uncertainty about the feasibility of training English players to accurately adopt the Spanish methodology. The 25-year-old English player elaborated to reporters: "Culturally, that tournament (the World Cup) or that match (against Argentina) was not the only time we were unable to control the game." He added: "As a nation, we don't possess the same strength as the Spaniards, nor do we dominate games as they do; it's simply not in our nature. I'm not sure it's something that can be taught, and now that I play in Spain, I can offer an informed opinion on how they retain possession." Gordon continued, highlighting the fundamental differences: "It's very different from what I've experienced in this country, so I'm not sure if we will ever reach that level." He proposed an alternative path, stating: "We can certainly improve, or perhaps take a different route and play to our strengths, such as relying on physical performance, direct play, and swift counter-attacks." Following their home fixture against Spain at Wembley Stadium, England is scheduled to visit the Czech Republic and Croatia as part of their Nations League commitments, before hosting the Czech Republic once more on home soil. The remaining two matches in this competition are set to take place in November.
