In controversial statements that have captured sports attention, Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo strongly criticized what he described as attempts by some channels and media outlets to attack him and "kill him" metaphorically. These remarks were made during his participation in a football summit in his home country, just ahead of the UEFA Nations League competitions. The 41-year-old veteran star is preparing for a new chapter with the Portuguese national team under the guidance of new coach Jorge Jesus. The team is set to kick off its campaign with a challenging match against Wales in the UEFA Nations League. Speaking to the Spanish newspaper (AS), Ronaldo expressed his anticipation for the upcoming phase, stating: "We are preparing for a new phase, and we must thank former coach Roberto Martinez for his contributions despite all the criticism he faced. Now we have a coach known to everyone, Jorge Jesus, and I trust things will go well with him." Responding to questions about the criticism directed at the national team, Ronaldo explained with a diplomatic tone: "I must maintain some diplomacy; I cannot be completely frank, but what I can say is that I have received a great welcome this year, and I understand that the media tries to kill me, but this will only happen with a rifle bullet, and even then, I will dodge the bullet." He added, expressing his indifference: "I am used to some people not liking me, but I cannot control that, and as for some people not liking me, it does not bother me." Regarding his footballing future and potential retirement, the former Real Madrid and Juventus star revealed he does not have a definitive answer, suggesting that the current season might be his last. He declared: "I don't know, I wish I knew the answer to this question, but it is likely that this season is my last, and when my last match comes, I will announce it, and I know that many want me to leave now." He also mentioned considering retirement after Portugal's participation concluded in the 2026 World Cup finals. Nevertheless, Cristiano Ronaldo affirmed his continuation on the field, clarifying his decision to stay came after sensing a strong desire from both the coach and the federation president for him to remain. He concluded: "But as long as I am here, this means I decided to continue. I can help the national team not only by scoring goals but also by assisting the new generation, but the most important thing for me is to stay on the field and score goals."
