The European potato market has undergone a dramatic transformation within just one year, shifting from a record surplus that had driven prices to their lowest levels, to growing concerns of a severe supply shortage and potential price hikes. This change is primarily attributed to an intensely hot summer that left fields drier and potato tubers smaller than usual. In this context, an analysis conducted by the "Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit" (ECIU), a non-profit British research organization, indicated that severe heatwaves and persistent drought likely reduced the potato crop in Germany, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands by approximately 3.1 million tons, compared to the average production recorded over the past five years. The economic value of the lost production in these four nations was estimated to be between 405 and 622 million Euros, based on current market prices. Furthermore, the organization's projections anticipate that the production in these countries, which constitute a major potato farming hub in Northwestern Europe, will decline to between 19.5 and 20.5 million tons during 2026, after reaching a record level of 27.3 million tons in 2025. However, adverse weather conditions were not the sole factor responsible for this supply gap. Following the substantial surplus witnessed in the 2025 harvest, which led to a sharp collapse in prices, many farmers made the decision to reduce the areas allocated for potato cultivation during the current agricultural season. The quantity that went unplanted as a result of this decision is estimated to be an additional 3.6 million tons. Subsequently, the heatwaves and drought intensified pressure on already planted areas, negatively impacting their productivity and the quality of their yield. Commenting on this shift, Craig Elliot, a market analyst at commodity price information firm "Expana," told the Financial Times: "We have gone from a record high to a record low in one year, if estimates hold." Data from the "Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit" points to a yield decrease below the five-year average of 21 percent in Belgium, 13 percent in France, 10 percent in Germany, and 7 percent in the Netherlands, reflecting the widespread impact of these climatic conditions. This issue is particularly evident in France, where the potato growers' association expects the main crop to decline by 23 percent during 2026, equivalent to about two million tons compared to last year. Forecasts suggest that the average yield per hectare will fall to 37.4 tons, marking a 14 percent decrease from 2025, making it the second-lowest level recorded in three decades, following the severe drought season that hit the country in 2022. Farmers have reported that high temperatures and insufficient rainfall halted potato growth in a significant number of fields, especially those not relying on irrigation systems. The problem extends beyond merely the tonnage produced; it also encompasses the size and quality of the potato tubers. In some fields, the majority of potatoes have a diameter of less than 40 millimeters, whereas chip and French fry manufacturers typically prefer tubers exceeding 50 millimeters in diameter to ensure optimal product quality. These challenging conditions prompted the French producers' association to call on factories to relax certain current contract terms and accept different sizes and specifications for the harvest, thereby avoiding the rejection of a substantial portion of the available produce. Signs of this transformation are already manifesting in the markets, with prices for some new industrial potato varieties rising to approximately 250 Euros per ton in various European regions, after hovering around just 30 Euros a year ago. Nevertheless, this price increase does not necessarily benefit all farmers, as some are bound by contracts signed before the onset of the heatwaves, potentially leaving them with lower production and higher costs without fully capturing the market's recorded increase. The 2026 estimates remain preliminary and subject to change as harvesting operations are completed. Although discussions currently revolve around a potential supply shortage rather than the disappearance of potatoes from markets, current indicators reveal a harsh agricultural paradox. In 2025, farmers feared not finding buyers for their abundant harvest, whereas in 2026, the market may find itself searching for potatoes after cultivated areas have shrunk and heat prevented tubers from growing to the desired size.
