As the upcoming FIFA presidential election approaches, Gianni Infantino, FIFA president, firmly dismissed any intentions to resign, highlighting the extensive support he enjoys from member associations. This statement comes three months after calls for his resignation emerged, following a proposal to sell commercial rights related to major FIFA competitions, including the World Cup, to private investors. Infantino's chances of securing a new term until 2031 have been strengthened after the Asian Football Confederation president, Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, announced the continent's backing of his candidacy. Responding to questions about stepping down, Infantino emphasized that his presidency is based on election by the 211 member associations, stressing the importance of respecting the majority's will within the democratic process. He noted that both the Asian and African confederations have expressed their support, affirming that the final decision on FIFA's next president rests with the member associations.
