The Ministry of Construction, Housing, and Public Municipalities has announced the launch of a national project to build one million housing units, as part of a comprehensive housing roadmap aimed at addressing Iraq's escalating housing crisis. The project encompasses new residential cities, lands allocated for real estate developers, and investment complexes, with a focus on delivering essential services to lands located outside city centers and governorates, under the supervision of the National Investment Commission. Nabil al-Saffar, the Ministry's spokesperson, clarified that "the one million housing units project represents the total units within new residential cities, whether already awarded or pending award, in addition to real estate developer projects and investment complexes." He further noted that the Ministry's Housing Department played a pivotal role in formulating a national housing policy based on a realistic and implementable vision to tackle housing challenges. In collaboration with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), the Housing Department developed the National Housing Policy for the years 2025-2030. The international program contributed its expertise to drafting this policy, providing the institutional and knowledge framework to ensure its alignment with global standards and sustainable development goals. This integrated policy aims to support the housing sector, boost economic growth, create job opportunities, and encourage initiatives for affordable and sustainable housing. Al-Saffar concluded by emphasizing that "this policy is the fruit of joint efforts between government institutions and civil society, formulated in response to the challenges facing Iraq's housing sector, with the goal of establishing sustainable solutions to the housing crisis."
