Millions spent annually on importing tea into Iraq

In a scenario highlighting structural challenges facing the local economy, official data released by the United Nations COMTRADE database revealed the magnitude of funds allocated to meet daily consumer needs. In this context, Ali Karim Izuhaib, an economic and financial researcher at the Dijlah Lights Organization for Strategic Planning, confirmed on Sunday that these figures demonstrate a massive drain on hard currency due to citizens' daily living details. Izuhaib explained, via a statement issued by the organization, that India's tea exports alone directed to the Iraqi market recorded a significant increase to reach approximately 125.24 million US dollars during the past year 2025. He pointed out that these substantial sums are spent exclusively to secure this widely consumed commodity in every household and cafe across the country. The economic expert noted that this reality sheds light on a paradox requiring a review of financial and production policies, questioning the feasibility of a resource-rich nation continuously relying entirely on foreign markets to provide a staple consumer good that consumes millions from the treasury to benefit farmers and investors in India and abroad, while local capacities and potentials remain sidelined without strategic plans to localize national food industries.
