Tehran studies civilian insurance system control maritime traffic

Fars News Agency reported, citing a document, that the Iranian Ministry of Economy is pursuing a plan to "make the management of the Strait of Hormuz possible through insurance," so that it would be acceptable to countries in times of peace, with the possibility of managing the strait.

According to the agency, under this plan, Iran will achieve informational oversight and the ability to distinguish between the transit movement of vessels from different countries.

It added: "Since the beginning of the Ramadan war, Iran has declared that 'securing the safety of the Strait of Hormuz is the responsibility of the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic.' Consequently, its management will be permanently in Iran's hands, given the damage it suffered due to the passage of enemy ships through this strait."

It pointed out that "from the perspective of international law, transit fees cannot be imposed on ships in the post-war phase, and the management of the strait will be limited to selling services only, which could generate two billion dollars for Iran at best. In addition, given the limited infrastructure in Iran, the sale of services will also be limited."

It emphasized that: "Managing the Strait of Hormuz through insurance takes on a completely civilian character, making it acceptable to countries, unlike the fee imposition system."
