A report from the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency revealed that Russia is working on developing a nuclear weapon capable of being deployed in Earth's orbit and detonated to target thousands of satellites simultaneously. The report indicates that such a weapon could violate the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, which prohibits placing nuclear weapons in orbit. It warns that a nuclear explosion in space could generate strong electromagnetic pulses and radiation belts lasting for years, potentially disrupting satellites and causing extensive damage to digital infrastructure and critical services worldwide. Meanwhile, British military officials have raised concerns about increasing Russian threats in space, noting dangerously close approaches of Russian satellites to American ones, as well as risks to navigation and communication systems. They emphasized that the growing global reliance on space technology makes economies and civilian services more vulnerable to any potential attack.
