The Acting Chargé d'affaires of the US Embassy in Baghdad, Steven Fagin, affirmed on Sunday the United States' support for Iraq regarding the file of foreign prisoners, during his meeting with Iraqi Justice Minister Khalid Shawani. This affirmation comes in the context of enhancing ongoing bilateral cooperation between the two countries on various issues. The meeting in Baghdad addressed several common interest files, most notably the issue of foreign detainees transferred from Syria to Iraq. The two sides also discussed avenues for enhancing bilateral cooperation in legal and judicial fields, with the aim of developing the judicial system in both countries. According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Justice, the meeting focused on mechanisms for cooperation and coordination concerning the foreign prisoner file, and how to deal with it within recognized legal frameworks and adopted procedures. Fagin, as per the statement, expressed his deep gratitude and appreciation to the Iraqi government and the Ministry of Justice for their pivotal role in the process of transferring foreign prisoners from Syria to Iraq. He affirmed that Washington coordinates with its partners to provide the necessary support to Iraq in this file, which contributes to strengthening joint efforts and the strategic partnership between Baghdad and Washington.
