We are now surrounded by sensors capable of continuously processing sound and data, or when specific functions are activated. This development introduces complex security challenges, moving beyond the simple question of whether our phone is eavesdropping. Dr. Mohamed Mohsen Ramadan, Head of the AI and Cybersecurity Unit at the Arab Research and Studies Center, states that the fundamental shift is from the concept of a "personal device" to that of an "ambient digital environment." Previously, users largely controlled their devices; now, they are encircled by dozens of smart devices collecting diverse data, even if not directly owned or used. He stresses that a microphone's mere presence does not imply constant recording of all conversations. Capturing, recording, storing, transmitting, and analyzing sound are distinct technical processes, each with specific conditions, permissions, and operating mechanisms. Thus, discussions of "spying" should avoid generalization and fear-mongering, instead focusing on device function, application permissions, privacy settings, and system security. Dr. Ramadan elaborates that the true security concern emerges not from "Does the device record?" but from the more critical inquiry: "What is the value of voice data if it reaches unauthorized parties?" In the age of AI, sound is no longer mere transient waves. Voice recordings can be converted to text, speakers separated, content analyzed, and information linked to other digital contexts. The greater danger lies in voice cloning technologies, capable of producing artificial voices highly similar to real individuals, enabling identity impersonation, fraud, and social engineering. Cybercriminals now seek information to build convincing "digital personas," not just passwords. A short recording might contain a person's name, profession, family names, or casual details. Individually, these seem trivial, but AI algorithms combine them to form a comprehensive picture of the person, their behavior, and relationships. This aggregation of "small data" into "big information" is the core threat. Wearable devices present a new privacy challenge. Smart earbuds, watches, or glasses, while not necessarily "spying devices," contain advanced sensors, communication, and processing capabilities. Therefore, they must adhere to cybersecurity principles, including continuous updates, specific permissions, trusted applications, clear privacy settings, and robust protection for associated accounts. Major General Mahmoud Al-Rashidi, former Assistant Minister of Interior for Information Security in Egypt, concurs with this perspective, adding in special statements to "Al-Arabiya.net" and "Al-Hadath.net" that modern cars are similar, having become integrated digital systems with internet, sensors, and voice assistants. Consequently, the cybersecurity "attack surface" now encompasses any connected device capable of data collection, processing, or exchange, not just computers. He emphasizes that the equation has changed; each new smart device adds functionality but also a new point requiring management and protection. He highlights the common error of believing privacy protection merely means covering a camera, whereas data revealing much about a person is far broader, including voice, location, usage patterns, connected devices, and interaction history, which collectively form a user's "digital footprint." Al-Rashidi clarifies that voice privacy protection starts with awareness. He advises users to review microphone permissions for applications, granting access only when truly necessary. He also recommends reviewing and removing unused devices linked to personal accounts, consistently updating operating systems and firmware, and avoiding downloads from unknown or suspicious sources. In professional environments, stricter protocols are vital. Meetings involving sensitive financial, strategic, or personal data must consider the presence of recording-capable smart devices, with clear policies defining permitted usage in sensitive areas. He specifically addresses parents and youth: "Do not treat voice as transient. A recording that seems a short clip today could tomorrow become part of material for AI analysis, reuse, or manipulation." He concludes by stressing that technology is neither "completely safe" nor "always spying"; reality is complex, and digital security is about managing risks, not absolute judgments. The correct questions are not "Does technology hear us?" but "What data can technology collect? Who can access it? How is it stored? And what could happen if it falls into the wrong hands?" He affirms that cyber awareness is a daily necessity, not a luxury. As connected devices expand, it is crucial to learn how to manage their permissions, understand their functions, and minimize the data we do not need to share. Ultimately, digital privacy is protected not by a single device or application, but by "conscious behavior and an integrated security system."
