Masrour Barzani, Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq, on Thursday praised Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi, describing him as a true, trustworthy leader and friend committed to doing what is right for the country. In an interview with "The Monitor," Barzani expressed his government's full support for Al-Zaidi's efforts to combat corruption, enforce the rule of law, and disarm factions. In another context, Barzani affirmed the Region has never provoked anyone or threatened its neighbors' security, questioning the reasons for the attacks it faces. He indicated that certain parties aim to intimidate and drag them into a conflict they strongly refuse to join. The KRG Prime Minister also voiced deep concern over the reduction of remaining US training and support forces in the Kurdistan Region and the redeployment of American Patriot air defense systems. He clarified the Region has not yet acquired effective defense systems for protection, noting ongoing efforts to secure these capabilities. Barzani further stated they had relied on appreciated American support, highly successful in intercepting most incoming missiles and drones. He emphasized the Region is now vulnerable, and continued attacks alongside the withdrawal of these air defense systems will undoubtedly place them in immediate danger. He called on all friends to assist in building necessary defense capabilities. Responding to an inquiry about his expectations beyond the September 30 deadline for armed factions to surrender weapons, Barzani hoped these groups would comply before the date. He concluded that he believes no one desires military confrontation or chaos, yet affirmed the government must protect its people, sovereignty, and homeland, acknowledging it as a very difficult task.
