The Israeli Airports Authority said, today Thursday, that Ben Gurion International Airport, Israel's main air gateway near Tel Aviv, is operating at around a third of its capacity due to the presence of American refueling aircraft, threatening the cancellation of a large number of flights this summer.
The Authority's Director General Sharon Kidmi told the Israeli Broadcasting Corporation's Radio Reshet Bet that 70% of airport activity has been reduced due to the space and resources occupied by American military activities.
Kidmi said the airport is using only a third of its operational capacity, confirming they have reached the maximum limits of their capabilities and that cancellations of some flights will be announced in the coming days.
He added that foreign airlines will not be able to return soon, and that flights for up to 3 million passengers will be cancelled, while dozens of American refueling aircraft are currently stationed at Ben Gurion Airport.
