Egyptian-Turkish Talks in Baghdad Urge Washington and Tehran to Negotiate

Amid diplomatic efforts to mitigate Middle Eastern volatility, Egypt and Turkey have jointly urged the United States and Iran to prioritize dialogue and revive the diplomatic track through direct negotiations. Both countries emphasized that structured diplomacy represents the only viable path to resolving the current crisis, underscoring the urgent necessity of ending an escalatory wave that inflicts severe damage on the vital interests and stability of all regional states. This unified position emerged during high-level talks held in Baghdad between Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. The bilateral meeting took place on the sidelines of the 52nd session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, according to an official press statement issued on Saturday, October 17, by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Ambassador Nader Zaki. The discussions focused extensively on complex regional developments, particularly the Iranian file. Minister Abdelatty emphasized the importance of sustaining diplomatic momentum and supporting political pathways, calling for intensified consultation within the Regional Quartet mechanism to reinforce regional security. The Egyptian minister firmly rejected any threats to the security of Gulf nations, while condemning the use of international straits and maritime corridors as tools for pressure or escalation. Both ministers reviewed existing proposals aimed at reaching understandings between Washington and Tehran to contain rising friction. The consultation agenda further broadened to address multiple pressing regional crises, including the situation in Yemen, where both ministers reiterated their support for national state institutions while renewing their condemnation of unjustified attacks against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Regarding Sudan, Abdelatty stressed the imperative of preserving Sudanese unity, territorial integrity, and national institutions, expressing backing for political initiatives that fulfill the aspirations of the Sudanese people. Addressing Libya and Syria, the Egyptian top diplomat underscored the importance of advancing the Libyan political process and unifying national institutions to bring an end to internal division. On the Syrian front, he reaffirmed the necessity of safeguarding Syria's sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity to enable state institutions to fulfill their duties, while voicing absolute rejection of Israeli strikes on Syrian territory. The meeting concluded with both sides agreeing to maintain coordination through the Regional Quartet to consolidate regional peace.
