In a move signaling Iraq's transition to a new phase of full sovereignty and self-reliance in security, Lieutenant General Abdul Amir Al-Shammari, Director of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, affirmed the utmost readiness of Iraqi forces to protect the country's borders, land, and airspace. This statement came today, Wednesday, coinciding with the conclusion of the international coalition's mission, which represents a significant shift in security responsibility towards national forces. Al-Shammari emphasized that September 30th marks a prominent historical milestone for Iraq, concluding long years of war against terrorism, and paving the way for a day of full sovereignty. He clarified that this day signifies the complete transfer of security responsibility to Iraqi forces, which now possess the necessary capability and experience to fulfill their duties in protecting the country and preserving its security and stability. He pointed out that over the past years, Iraqi forces have made considerable progress in building capabilities and accumulating field experience, proving their effectiveness in confronting challenges and achieving victory over terrorism. Al-Shammari affirmed that all branches and formations of the Iraqi forces are fully prepared to deal with any threat to Iraq's national security. The senior military official explained that the termination of the international coalition's mission came in accordance with a prior agreement with the Iraqi government, following a precise assessment of the security situation and the capabilities of national forces. He clarified that this transition by no means signifies an end to cooperation with friendly nations; rather, it marks a starting point for a new phase of bilateral relations focused on training, expertise exchange, information, and capacity building, aligned with Iraq's national interests. In a related context, Al-Shammari remembered with appreciation the martyrs of the security forces who sacrificed their lives for Iraq, and commended the support provided by the international coalition countries during the war against ISIS. Al-Shammari reassured the Iraqi people that "their Iraqi forces are fully prepared to assume their responsibilities completely, protecting Iraq's borders, land, and airspace, and safeguarding citizens' security and the gains of victory." He stressed that reaching this stage is the result of years of sacrifices, diligent work, and capacity building, noting that the Day of Full Sovereignty is not merely an end to one phase, but the beginning of a comprehensive Iraqi responsibility for the country's security and prosperous future.
