In a step reflecting joint understandings between the two countries, official Turkish authorities revealed new details regarding the military presence on Iraqi soil, as the Turkish Ministry of Defense announced on Thursday that the decision to hand over the Bashiqa-Zelikan base to the Iraqi government will take place gradually. The ministry explained in an official statement that the process of transferring responsibility and re-handing over the military base will be carried out according to the mechanism previously agreed upon by both sides, noting that this decision comes in light of the prominent progress recently achieved by the Iraqi government in implementing security measures and imposing stability in the Sinjar region.
