Italian authorities on Wednesday imposed penalties on 16 AS Roma fans, prohibiting them from entering stadiums nationwide. This decision followed their performance of a fascist salute with an extended arm during the team's home match against Atalanta in Serie A. Rome police stated that the duration of these bans ranges from one to five years. These measures encompass all AS Roma matches held outside Italy, along with Italian national football team games. Furthermore, four of the sanctioned fans will be required to report to police stations during AS Roma matches. The fans performed the fascist salute in the "Curva Sud" stand, known as the stronghold for the club's most fervent supporters, during the match on the evening of September 5th. AS Roma secured a 2-1 victory in that game, thanks to two crucial late goals scored by Mario Hermoso and Matias Soulé. The fascist salute is not explicitly prohibited under all circumstances in Italy; courts review each incident individually. Prosecution for such actions is possible under laws forbidding the re-establishment of the Fascist Party and the incitement of racial hatred.
