Members of the Maysan Provincial Council expressed their rejection today, Monday, of any attempts to impose oversight on elected institutions, emphasizing that the independence of provincial councils is a red line that must not be crossed. This statement came in response to the Prime Minister's directive to investigate the council chairman, Mustafa Daer Abdulhassan, following his remarks concerning the Sheeb border crossing. Hussein Ali Al-Miryani, a council member, stated that Maysan adheres firmly to the constitution and defends the right of provincial councils to autonomy, stressing that this issue is non-negotiable. Similarly, Ali Jasib Al-Zidawi, another council member, affirmed that defending the province's rights and reopening the Sheeb crossing is a national responsibility, and that citizens' demands cannot be postponed or ignored.
