Iraq's Ministry of Transport has ruled out a closure of Iraqi airspace in the coming period, despite ongoing security developments in the region. The ministry announced its success in establishing alternative air routes in cooperation with specialized international organizations to ensure air traffic continuity. Concurrently, it revealed the launch of nine new international destinations departing from three local airports, reflecting its continuous efforts to expand the air transport network. In this context, Ihab Saad, Director General of the General Company for Airport Management and Air Navigation, stated that the ministry has developed several alternative air routes in close cooperation with relevant international organizations. He added that studies for further routes are ongoing, aiming for future openings to align with air traffic demands and regional security dynamics. Saad further mentioned that the company continuously monitors air traffic and coordinates with concerned parties to ensure the smooth flow and safety of flights. The company awaits regional de-escalation to resume previous routes used by airlines transiting Iraqi airspace. Saad affirmed Iraqi airspace's high stability and security, noting no closures in recent months despite regional security events and tensions. This stability significantly contributed to continuous air traffic and passenger flow through the country's airports. He also pointed out that sustained air traffic positively impacted passenger numbers, exceeding 500,000 during the third quarter of 2026. These figures underscore continued air and operational activity at local airports, alongside increasing trust in using Iraqi airspace as a safe route. The Director General further emphasized that current indicators of navigational and security stability rule out future Iraqi airspace closures. He affirmed the ministry continuously monitors developments, taking necessary measures for aircraft and passenger safety and air navigation continuity. For network expansion, Saad disclosed the opening of nine new international destinations from three local airports. These new destinations include three routes from Baghdad International Airport (Moscow, Tunis, Muscat), four from Kirkuk Airport (Antalya, Beirut, Dubai, Trabzon), and two from Basra International Airport (Baku, Delhi). Finally, Saad explained that establishing alternative routes and opening new destinations align with the ministry's ambitious plan to develop air transport and boost economic benefits from Iraqi airspace. It also aims to support local airport activity and provide broader options for airlines and passengers, enhancing Iraq's strategic position on the regional and international air transport map.
