New Judge Assigned to Case Involving Venezuelan President and His Wife

A court in the Southern District of New York has appointed Judge Analisa Torres to preside over the lawsuit filed against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife in the United States. The court previously announced the death of U.S. Federal Judge Alvin Hellerstein, who had been handling the case, at the age of 92. The judicial institution confirmed that the case has been reassigned to Judge Analisa Torres in the local U.S. court. Judge Torres has prior experience with complex cases, having previously overseen a case involving two employees at the federal prison in New York City linked to the death of financier Jeffrey Epstein in August 2019. The two employees were charged with falsifying official records related to inmate checks on the night of Epstein's death, and in 2021, the judge approved agreements to defer prosecution of the accused.
