Recent studies have uncovered a phenomenon that may impact our cognitive abilities, indicating that taking screenshots on smartphones can diminish individuals' capacity to recall content they have viewed later. Surprisingly, this decline in memory is not offset by any mental gains that could compensate for the loss. A series of research experiments revealed that merely saving content using a "screenshot" leads to a reduction in attention to the experience itself at the time it occurs, which directly weakens the process of solidifying that experience in memory. These findings were published in the esteemed journal Memory & Cognition. Psychologists have long been interested in studying the increasing effects of digital devices on how memories are stored in the human brain. In a similar context, a previous study conducted in 2014 found that photographing exhibits in museums made individuals less able to recall their specific details compared to simply observing them. This phenomenon was termed the "photo-taking impairment effect." Commenting on these findings, cognitive psychology researcher Sofia Fabrizzio, in collaboration with Professor of Psychology, Cognitive and Brain Sciences Diane Westerman from Binghamton University, explained that these observations appear strikingly paradoxical. People often resort to taking photos or screenshots with the aim of preserving moments and events in their memory, yet scientific evidence demonstrates that the act of photography itself can hinder this primary objective. Research expanded in 2025 to encompass modern digital behavior, with a new study revealing that taking screenshots also negatively affects memory associated with visual arts. Initially, the research team hypothesized that screenshots might be less detrimental than traditional phone photography, as they do not require precise camera aiming, frame adjustment, or even shifting one's gaze away from the original scene. However, the results contradicted these expectations, showing that the negative impact on memory was more pronounced when using "screenshots" compared to regular photographic capture. In an attempt to understand the underlying mechanism of this phenomenon, researchers based their work on the concept of "cognitive offloading." This concept refers to the human tendency to rely on digital devices as external repositories for information and memories, thereby reducing the brain's need to actively retain them. A 2019 study had previously shown that storing information in digital files can alleviate the cognitive burden on the brain, allowing it to direct mental resources to other tasks. This idea posits that an individual's knowledge that information is saved elsewhere diminishes the brain's urgency to retain it internally. Stemming from this concept, researchers sought to verify whether screenshots represent an automatic form of "cognitive offloading," wherein the brain interprets them as safely stored information and consequently ceases to exert effort to remember them. If this assumption were correct, the decline in memory might be accompanied by an improvement in mental performance in other tasks due as some cognitive resources are freed up. To test this hypothesis, the team conducted seven separate experiments involving a number of university students. However, the results did not show any additional cognitive benefits that could compensate for the memory loss. Researchers also found that this effect occurs automatically and unconsciously, even among individuals who habitually take screenshots daily as part of their digital routine. In light of these discoveries, researchers believe that thousands of screenshots stored on phones often remain unreviewed, making them susceptible to being forgotten by the human's natural memory system. Experts advise that if a particular piece of information or experience is genuinely important and an individual wishes to remember it, it may be best to put the phone aside and fully concentrate on the event itself. Furthermore, digital tools remain valuable for reminding individuals of appointments and daily tasks, but when it comes to forming deep and lasting memories, it may be prudent not to rely entirely on constant photography and documentation of everything.
