Planet Labs announced a temporary halt to satellite imagery related to Iran and the Middle East, following a request from the U.S. government amid ongoing security developments.
The company stated in a message to clients that the decision came after Washington urged commercial satellite firms to limit publishing images of conflict zones to reduce the risk of their use in military operations against U.S. interests and allies.
This step expands an earlier policy that delayed imagery for two weeks, now applying a full freeze on all images since early March until the conflict subsides.
Planet Labs added it has implemented a flexible distribution system, allowing image release in emergency or public interest situations, aiming to balance security with transparency.
Vantor, on the other hand, said it did not receive direct instructions but imposed its own restrictions on access to imagery in sensitive areas based on its conflict policies.
Experts believe satellite imagery is a critical tool in modern conflicts, used for surveillance, targeting, and also for research and media purposes.
