World Meteorological Organization Warns: Toxic Wildfire Smoke Causes 100,000 Additional Deaths Annually

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), a United Nations agency, has revealed severe health impacts from the increasing prevalence of wildfires, stating that toxic smoke from them caused an estimated 100,000 additional deaths annually between 2010 and 2018. This warning comes as the number of fires globally has tripled over the past three decades. A WMO report indicates that severe smoke events from these fires have tripled since the 1990s. According to estimates, the actual annual death toll is likely much higher than reported figures. WMO studies caution that pollution from these wildfires, coupled with recurrent extreme heatwaves, could undermine global efforts to improve air quality. The report noted that wildfires have become an increasingly significant source of atmospheric pollution, especially as many developed countries have reduced harmful industrial and transport emissions through stringent environmental regulations. It specifically highlights the growing impact of fine particulate matter and surface ozone, major pollutants linked to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Data presented shows that levels of these fine particulates exceeded normal rates in 2025 across northern Canada, parts of Russia, and West and Central Africa, due to a significant rise in fires. Northwestern Spain also became a hotspot for severe pollution following an unprecedented, intense wave of fires in late summer 2025. In light of these challenges, the United Nations has called for stricter monitoring of pollutants such as black carbon (soot) and microplastics. The report's authors believe current oversight of these substances remains insufficient, despite their widespread presence, necessitating more effective mitigation measures.
