Barak Highlights Iraq's Choice of Sovereignty, Investment, and Partnership under Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaydi

Tom Barak, the special envoy of the U.S. president to Iraq, emphasized that under Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaydi, Iraq has chosen a clear path of sovereignty over dependency, focusing on investment rather than stagnation, and adopting partnership instead of agency. Barak noted in a post on the platform X following his meeting with Al-Zaydi that the Middle East resembles a Rubik's cube, where all parts are interconnected and no single country or external power can solve its complexities alone; rather, the countries of the region must move the pieces themselves with patience and cooperation, which Iraq is currently doing. He added that the United States takes pride in supporting Iraq by deepening economic and trade relations, opening opportunities for American companies and Iraqi talents alike, to build prosperity beneficial to all. The discussions between Barak and Al-Zaydi also addressed major challenges, including calming regional tensions and containing crises before they escalate, emphasizing the importance of choosing diplomacy over escalation. He stressed that the responsibility for security and stability primarily lies with the countries of the region and Iraq’s neighbors willing to take charge of their future, considering this regional transformation as one in which America is a partner, not a substitute. Barak concluded by affirming that a sovereign and prosperous Iraq, rooted in a region that takes responsibility for its stability, benefits Iraqis, their neighbors, and the United States alike.
