Government Directive to Upgrade Border Crossings and Establish New Routes to Boost Trade

The Border Ports Authority announced a directive from Prime Minister Ali Falih Al-Zaydi to upgrade border crossings and establish new routes aimed at enhancing trade exchange and ensuring the supply of citizens' needs. The Authority's head, Major General Omar Al-Waeli, explained that work is ongoing around the clock to implement these directives, especially at crossings linking Iraq with the Islamic Republic of Iran, responding to appeals from Iraqi traders and importers who faced congestion of vegetable shipments on the Iranian side and the risk of spoilage. He pointed out that this directive contributed to the direct entry of goods, which positively affected vegetable prices in local markets. He added that the Authority closely monitors trade and import movements, striving to achieve several goals including increasing non-oil revenues, providing job opportunities for drivers and workers, and supporting the Iraqi market with foodstuffs and essential supplies. Al-Waeli confirmed that the flow of goods from Iran to Iraq is smooth, and that the Prime Minister recently ordered the commencement of development and rehabilitation works at border crossings, equipping them with advanced inspection devices based on a comprehensive assessment of infrastructure and its needs. He indicated that the Authority will continue in the coming days to carry out rehabilitation and development works and provide the necessary equipment to accelerate goods movement, enhance the efficiency of crossings, and support trade exchange.
